Showcase website or business application: which one do you need?

Showcase website, editorial platform, web or mobile application: how to choose based on your goal, your team and your budget, with concrete business examples.

Many requests start with “I want an app” when the need is a website, and the reverse happens too: a showcase site bent for two years to make it handle orders. This guide helps you decide before you spend, based on what we see among businesses in Douala, the sub-region and the diaspora.

Three different objects

The showcase website

It presents a company, its services, its proof and its contact channels. Its main job is to be found on Google and in AI answer engines, then to convince in thirty seconds. It changes little, it must load fast, and it must stay editable by your team. Five to eight pages are almost always enough.

The editorial platform

A site that publishes regularly: news, resources, offers, articles. It needs a comfortable administration interface, a structure designed for dozens of pages, and publishing discipline. It is the tool of consultancies, schools, media outlets and organisations that live on their expertise.

The business application

A tool people use every day to do their job: till, stock, delivery rounds, client files, bookings. It holds rules, roles, data to protect and often an offline mode. It is not there to be found; it is there to make the company run.

The one-question test

Ask yourself a single question: “Who uses this tool, and how many times a day?”

  • Strangers, once: they are looking for a provider, a product, an address. You need a showcase website.
  • Readers, every week: they come back for new content. You need an editorial platform.
  • Your team or your clients, several times a day: they enter, look up, approve. You need a business application.

If your answer mixes all three, start with the first case on the list that applies to you. A showcase website can carry an editorial platform later; an application can live on a subdomain of the same site.

Four real situations

An HR consultancy wanted “a platform”. In conversation, the need was to make seven areas of expertise and a regional coverage easy to read. The bilingual showcase website we delivered, described in the RegardsRH case study, does that job with no application logic at all.

An IT solutions reseller had a catalogue, partners and training courses. The right answer was an administrable site structured by offer and by country, so that each solution has its own search page. That is the HOODO project.

A pool builder needed to reassure before the quote with past projects and a visual catalogue. A showcase website with an administrable gallery was enough, see C KMER Building.

Shops keeping their books in notebooks needed to sell without a network and stay compliant with the OHADA chart of accounts. No website does that: it is an application, OptiStore, with an offline point of sale and SYSCOHADA accounting.

The expensive mistakes

  • Building an application before having a website: you invest in an internal tool while nobody can find you yet.
  • Forcing a showcase site to do management: forms that send e-mails to sort by hand, shared spreadsheets, lost data. After a year, everything gets rebuilt.
  • Choosing the tool before the process: an application does not fix a blurry process. We start by observing the field, the first step of our method.
  • Forgetting the network: an application designed for fibre is unusable in a warehouse in Bonabéri. Degraded mode is designed from the start, not after.

Can you have both?

Yes, and it is often the right path: first a showcase website to exist in search, then an application when an internal process justifies it and the budget is there. Both share the domain, the visual identity and, if you wish, the same team. The reverse order, application first, is rarely right for a company that does not yet have regular clients.

Decide in thirty minutes

Describe your activity, who will use the tool and how many times a day, on the contact page. We reply within 48 hours with a written recommendation and a range, whether you do the project with us or not.

Frequently asked questions

Does an application always cost more than a website?

Yes, because it holds business logic, roles and data to protect. Expect eight to sixteen weeks against four to eight for a website, and a budget quoted after scoping.

Can we start with a website and add an application later?

That is the recommended path: the website builds presence and search visibility, the application comes when an internal process justifies it. Both can share one domain and one identity.
