Brand identity: logo, brand guidelines or design system?

What a brand identity is, the difference between a logo, brand guidelines and a design system, what each costs in Cameroon, and how to pick the right level.

“We need a logo.” That is almost always how a brand identity request starts, and it is almost always the wrong question. A logo on its own does not survive three months: it ends up stretched on a banner in Akwa, recoloured in a Word document, and unrecognisable on WhatsApp. This guide explains what a business brand identity is, the difference between a logo, brand guidelines and a design system, what each costs in Cameroon and Central Africa, and how to know what your company actually needs.

A visual identity is a system of signs your whole team can reproduce without you: the logo and its variants, the colours, the typefaces, the patterns, the way photos are framed, the tone of the copy. The logo is the most visible piece, not the most important one. What makes a company recognisable is the consistent repetition of all these elements, on a business card as on an application.

Test yours: take your latest Facebook post, your PDF quote and your shop sign. If a client cannot tell they come from the same company, you have a logo, not an identity.

Logo, brand guidelines, design system: three levels

The logo and its variants

The bare minimum: a primary logo, a horizontal version, a reduced version or monogram for small formats, and versions for light backgrounds, dark backgrounds and single colour. Delivered in the right formats, vector for the printer, PNG for documents, SVG for the web. Without the variants, the logo degrades from its first use.

Brand guidelines

The document that explains how to use the signs: colours with their exact codes for screen and print, typefaces and their roles, clear space around the logo, application examples, what not to do. It is what lets a printer in Bonanjo, an intern and a communication agency produce the same thing without calling you.

The design system

The level above, useful as soon as the company has a website, an application or many materials: a library of reusable components, buttons, forms, cards, presentation and document templates, with their rules. The design system makes the website, the application and the sales deck unmistakably the same brand, and lets every new screen be assembled rather than redrawn. That is the approach of our brand systems expertise.

What it costs in Cameroon

Level What is delivered Indicative range Timeline
Logo and variants logo, monogram, versions, formats 100,000 to 250,000 FCFA 2 to 3 weeks
Full identity with guidelines brand platform, logo, colours, typefaces, patterns, guidelines, application kit 350,000 to 900,000 FCFA 6 to 10 weeks
Design system full identity plus a library of web and document components quoted after scoping 8 to 12 weeks

Logos at 25,000 FCFA exist. They usually come from a generator or a stock library, with unclear rights, no variants, and you will find them at a competitor’s. The real cost shows up when all the stationery, the sign and the website have to be redone because the logo does not hold.

Where the signs come from: the Mboa case

A credible identity is rooted somewhere. Many Cameroonian companies borrow codes from elsewhere, a European bank blue, a Californian start-up typeface, and look like everyone else. We start instead from local geometries: fabric patterns, architectural structures, market rhythms, redrawn as contemporary signs, never pasted on as decoration. That is what produced HuginMboa’s own patterns, and it is a method that works for an SME in Douala as for a company in Libreville or Brazzaville: rootedness makes you recognisable.

How an identity project runs

  1. Brand platform: what you say, to whom, and why you are believed. A week of interviews and a one-page document.
  2. Visual territory: two or three directions, with patterns and colours, shown in real situations, a shop sign, a quote, a phone screen, not on a white background.
  3. System: the chosen direction becomes logo, variants, palette, typefaces, patterns and rules.
  4. Applications: cards, letterheads, e-mail signatures, presentation templates, social media, and if needed the components of the website or application.
  5. Handover: source files, guidelines, a short team training. You own everything, including the working files.

The expensive mistakes

  • Choosing a logo by vote in a WhatsApp group: you get the blandest compromise.
  • Approving on a white background: a logo is judged on a banner in the sun, on a phone screen and in black on an invoice.
  • Forgetting the formats: a logo delivered in JPEG only is useless for the printer and for the web.
  • Not checking the rights: licensed typeface, borrowed images, a name already registered at OAPI.
  • Redoing the identity without redoing the website: the website is the first place the identity is judged; both are planned together, see our guide on choosing between a showcase website and an application.

Identity and search visibility

A consistent identity also helps you get found: a logo readable as a favicon, a share image recognisable on WhatsApp and LinkedIn, a company name always written the same way on the website, the Google listing and social profiles. Search engines, including AI assistants, associate a brand with a domain more easily when everything matches.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a professional logo cost in Cameroon?

A logo with its variants and formats costs between 100,000 and 250,000 FCFA at an independent studio. A full identity with brand guidelines sits between 350,000 and 900,000 FCFA depending on the number of materials.

What is the difference between brand guidelines and a design system?

Brand guidelines document how the signs are used: colours, typefaces, logo, examples. A design system adds a library of reusable components for the website, the application and documents, with their assembly rules.

Do I own the source files of my identity?

Yes. At HuginMboa, the source files, the guidelines and the usage rights are transferred to the client at delivery, including the working files.
